The Catholic Church reached its peak in the 13th century under the leadership of Pope Innocent III. The Church had grown not only in numbers, but also in territory, wealth, and power. The Church was founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ to go into the world and to spread the teachings of Christ to all nations. The Catholic Church had begun in this manner, but by the time Innocent III became the Papal leader, the church had started to divert its attention to matters other than spiritual in nature.
