The Catcher in the Rye Essay The Catcher in the Rye, the only novel that J. D. Salinger has released to date, is about Holden Caulfield and how he got put into a mental institution. The title of the book is a hint of what he wants to do with his life. The Catcher in the Rye refers to a rye field on the edge of a cliff and kids are playing tag or a game similar to it and the kids are not watching where they are going so some one need to be there to catch then from falling off the cliff. Holden is like one of those kids in the rye field, he is heading strait for the cliff and he knows it so he is looking for some one to save him from falling all through out the book. Holden tries to get help from many characters in the book.
