The automobile was developed in the late 19th century and quickly began to replace horse-drawn carriages by the early 20th century. Many people initially believed that the automobile was intended for the rich only and would never catch on within mainstream society. However, the 20th century brought about mass production techniques and the economic efficiency of high quantity production quickly made the automobile affordable to nearly everyone. The daily convenience of driving has led to a growing consumption of petroleum resources and the 20th century has been laced with intermittent supply concerns for oil-based resources. The increased use of fossil fuels has been accused for contributing to higher concentrations of "greenhouse gases"
