As with anything, when Judaism began many ideals, beliefs, and laws had to be discussed and set as a constant core belief. This often caused a lot of turmoil. Many found themselves confused as to what exactly would be considered breaking a law. That is understandable. Afterall, for example, what may be considered work to one person, to others may be just a relaxing day spent fishing. It really was not until Maimonides that the law of the Torah was set down precisely and specifically for the Jewish people. Studying the ancient Jewish texts, you notice that all laws and whatnot tend to be somewhat vague, under the guise that it is trying to be specific.
