Animal experimentation, or vivisection, is the scientific study of life processes in animals to advance biological knowledge. It is used primarily in research and teaching in such areas as product safety and effectiveness, disease states and possible cures, and anatomy and physiology. The animals commonly used in testing are mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs, frogs, and turtles, but many other species are also used (Monamy 6).
The number of animals unnecessarily used each year in experiments is not known with any certainty--records of rats and mice used, for example, are often not kept--but it probably exceeds 100 million. The reason that no record is kept of rats and mice is because they are not considered “animals
