Mathilde Loisel, also known as Madame Loisel, is a character in the short story, “The Necklace.” Madame Loisel is an attractive, charismatic woman. While at a party, every man wants to dance with her and be introduced to her. She may be a splendor to everyone else, but she thinks of herself as poor. She was born into a petty official’s family, and had no dowry. This led her to marrying a minor civil servant at the Ministry of Education. So, Madame Loisel lives in her dream world of richly decorated rooms and beautiful jewels. She nags her husband non-stop about not being rich, and through this all he still loves her. She is very self-important, and believes that she was destined for a higher class.
