In the year 1980 a french doctor by the name of Etienne-Emile invented what widely known as RU-486. RU-486 is a drug that when accompanied by the ingestion of a prostaglandin pill called misoprostol has been proven to end unwanted pregnancies. A woman seeking an abortion with the consultation and under the observation of her doctor would ingest the drug RU-486 in pill form. This drug effectively blocks the hormone progesterone, the hormone that is essential for establishing and maintaining a pregnancy. The absence of this hormone triggers the shedding of the uterus wall as if the woman was on her period.
