Marijuana, a schedule I controlled substance and product of the cannabis sativa plant, remains the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. (Green) One option available to drug policy makers is the removal of incarceration as an option for marijuana offenders. In the instance of marijuana, more time has been devoted to the question of whether or not simple possession of marijuana should be treated severely. Currently most countries treat marijuana as a criminal offense and persons convicted of simple marijuana possession can face possible jail time, being given a criminal record for their crime and being affected by the consequences of their conviction.
