On September 11, 2001, I saw a city stand still in shock as two of its landmarks came crashing down. The city that never sleeps had come to a virtual standstill. The movement at the attack site consisted of a group of firefighters, policeman, and volunteers scurrying around and through the wreckage like ants on an anthill, searching for victims. A steady stream of people were fleeing the area, receding from ground zero like the tide from the shore. The rest of the city looked on in paralysis as a scene unfolded before them, the likes of which had never even been contemplated. As I watched on my television, I saw the horror and the violence of the building’s collapse and heard the screams of those watching, but I also saw something else
