Same-sex marriages should be legally recognized by the United States government to give homosexuals equal marriage and adoption rights, along with the promotion of stable relationships. No homosexual couple in the United States can legally marry (American Civil Liberties Union 13).
Without the right to marriage, homosexuals are denied legal rights given to married heterosexual couples. The rights to family leave, Social Security funds, Medicare, joint parental custody, tax advantages, inheritance, hospital visitation, and joint insurance policies accompany marriage and do not benefit unmarried homosexuals.
