Interracial relationships between Black and White couples has been a topic of controversy in the United States since the time of slavery, when White owners interacted with Black slaves. After this time, segregation and laws were created to separate Blacks from Whites. This separation was social as well as mental. Both communities frowned upon interracial relationships. According to Ernest Porterfield (1982), "No other mixture touches off such widespread condemnation as black-White mixing" (p. 17). This negative reaction decreased the willingness to engage in an interracial relationship.
