Born Frederick Bailey on a Maryland plantation in 1783; Frederick Douglass was nothing more than an oppressed piece of property to another man. From this meager beginning Douglass would rise to become his own master, one of the great American orators, and a leader in the emancipation movement. Douglass’ Narrative remains important today because it offers the rare point of view of an actual slave.
