In most religions the leaders and hierarchy are usually male figures, such as priests, rabbis, monks, scribes and so on. Women usually play secondary passive roles. Thus women would not be accepted openly as leaders because religions cannot be separated from the cultural and ideological contexts that fostered their creation. In other words in men made it women cannot rule it. After stating this point imagining women as religious leaders seems impossible, the truth is that women have claimed leadership positions and still do today.
