“Ellis Island was the sieve in America’s immigration process; its Great Hall, crammed with people of many nationalities determined to become Americans, was the consummate melting pot.” (The Other Islands of New York City, p. 52) Ellis Island is 27.5 acres, which is, in comparison to the rest of the United States, geographically insignificant. But, to millions of people over a period of six decades, Ellis Island was tremendously important. For the thousands of immigrants who were deported from the island, it symbolized the shattering of hopes and dreams. For twelve million foreigners who entered America from there, Ellis Island was the first step into a new world.
