On May 4, 1884 Ida B. Wells bought a first class train ticket for her usual commute to work as a teacher at a school in rural Tennessee. However, after she had taken her seat on the train, the conductor informed her, that she would have to move to the smoking coach. The conductor explained that, under the railroad’s new “Separate but Equal” rules, “coloreds” were restricted to the smoking coach. Refusing to move to the smoking coach, Wells scuffled with two conductors who tried to forcibly remove her form the first class coach. She then walked off the train and filed a lawsuit against the railroad for discriminating against her. (Clark Cook)
