In 1832, Congress passed the first comprehensive Pension Act for veterans of the Revolution. It offered a yearly stipend to any man or widow who could prove service of more that six months in the struggle for independence. Being that most of the elderly veterans had little or no physical evidence of ever serving, the only evidence they could offer were oral accounts of what happened, thus, this lead to the first and largest oral historical projects ever undertaken anywhere. Professor John C. Dann of the University of Michigan is, now deciphering the 898 reels of microfilm stored at the National Archives in Washington.
