Growing up, Labor Day was my favorite day of the whole summer. Knowing it was the last big celebration of summer made me enjoy and appreciate it more than any other day of the season. What also made it so much fun was that we always went to Essex, Iowa to see my Aunt Mabel and enjoy the towns’ festivities.
Childhood memories always started out the same, a 50-mile car ride to Essex, Iowa. To most adults that is not a long trip; but to a child that knows how much fun lies at the end of the trip, it can seem like an eternity.
