The Carnival of the early modern European time period was a time of celebration marked on the calendar by a showing of pride in ones community. It included processions and parades and was filled with excessive eating, drinking, and sex. It is not unlike any other festivals or holidays that we celebrate, like Mardi gras or even in a sense Halloween. One thing they all share is that it is society ally accepted to act out of character. Carnival in the early modern European time period usually fell right before lent. Lent was a forty day period of abstaining from sex and excessive eating.
