Peter (also spelled Pyotr) Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7th, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. He was the second child in a family of six, five sons and one daughter. In 1850, Tchaikovsky was sent to the School of Jurisprudence in St. Petersburg, where he first began to compose. In June of 1854, his mother died of cholera, (which many years later, would also be the cause of his own death). This same year he was also sent to a military academy.
After reluctantly studying law, Peter was forced to become a clerk at the Ministry of Justice. At the age of twenty-one, he resigned from the Ministry of Justice. He then went on to study music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Many months after he started school at the Conservatory, he bega
