Who would eventually be said as “one of the America’s greatest commanders”#, William Tecumseh Sherman was born February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio. He was the son of a famous judge who had died when William was 9. After his death, William was adopted by a Missouri politician named Thomas Ewing. He fought as a Californian staff officer in the Mexican War, but resigned from the Army during 1853. He did not have much success at all in the years before the Civil War. He completely failed in the areas of banking and law. The one job he found interest in was Superintendent of a military academy in Louisiana(now known as Louisiana State University).
