One of the most compelling and highly developed characters in the novel Grendel, written by John Gardner, and the poem “Beowulf”, written by an anonymous poet, is the so-called “monster”, Grendel. As told in the epic poem “Beowulf”, Grendel is portrayed as a revolting, callous, murderous monster that destroys people for pure amusement. In the novel Grendel, one can see the other side of evil, view the world through the eyes of this crude monster and learn that the fame-seeking heroes of “Beowulf” may not have been as virtuous as one would first perceive them to be. This novel discloses the terrible life the Grendel had to endure, and it also introduces the reader to the humane qualities that Grendel did posses.
