Evelyn Waugh had a very similar experience to that of Tony in "A Handful of Dust". As a matter of fact, Waugh’s wife left him and went off with another man. Certainly, this made him very bitter and resentful towards her, but, at the same time, the love and hate he felt inspired him to write the novel. Brenda’s character is, in fact, based on his wife. Most probably, though, Brenda is an exaggerated version of her in order to give the story more emphasis.
Evelyn Waugh copes with his pain by seeing the funny side of what happened to him. This is the major reason to which we can attribute his novel having a significant element of comedy in it. Some of the situations can actually be described as being quite funny. An example of this
