Symantec was founded in 1982, and is based on the products developed by Peter Norton, Norton Utilities and Norton Anti-Virus. Its main thrust is still computer security. and antivirus software. In the early 1990s Symantec switched focus away from development of its own products. It chose instead to focus on the acquisitions of other companies that had interesting proprietary software products. Perhaps the most successful was the acquisition of engineer Peter Norton’s Norton Utilities. The Norton name has been used on related products ever since, and is one of Symantec’s strongest assets.
