Gary Johnson tends to focus on the concept of "beyond
the interpretation" in his article Interpretation
Revisited. He discusses the backlash against certain
formalist approaches in literary criticism. The New
Critic's being the ones issuing the majority of the
backlash. "As Susan J. Wolfson points out, the
"assaults" against formalist criticism were provoked
by the feeling that such an approach either resulted
in "social isolationism" or imposed on the critic
"intellectual constraints" (53). This particular
backlash has forever changed the formalist view.
