“…but is it morally right?” Morally right? I could search this world far and wide, and I would never be able to find the spot where morals are etched in stone. Morals and beliefs vary from one person to the next, which is why it is so hard to judge what is morally right and wrong. While reading about moral and philosophical criticism, I learned that most critics want to know if a reader becomes better or worse after reading a piece of work. The Roman critic Horace once said that literature both “pleases and instructs” its readers. Agreeing with the ancient critic, I think that literature, not only pleases and instructs, but also allows the reader to become more open to new ideas, beliefs, and eventually morals.
