Global warming is the idea that increased levels of carbon dioxide and certain other gases are causing an increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. It works under the basic priciple that radiation energy from the sun warms the earth’s surface and atmosphere and is then radiated out to space. Without global warming these two radiation streams must balance, but if they are not equal there is an increase in the earth’s surface temperature (Houghton 1997).
