Jane Austen tries to make the internal events more enjoyable and exciting, not by telling,
but by showing through her writing. In Pride and Prejudice she takes the lives of Mr.
Darcy and Elizabeth on a whirl wind of emotion, but she does it with their internal
thoughts.
At the Meryton ball Elizabeth distinctly hears Darcy call her “not handsome
enough” to dance with. Jane Austen, at that precise moment, opens the gates of
Elizabeth’s mind exposing all of her thoughts on Darcy. Austen uses inferences to show
how arrogant and pridefull Elizabeth thinks Darcy is. She also uses inferences when
Elizabeth receives the letter from Darcy, explaining about Wickham and their friendship,
and why Darcy tried to break up Jane and Bingley
