A major theme that remains constant in Shakespeare’s Hamlet is appearance versus reality. In the play people seem to be true, good and honest but in reality they are all infested with evil. The play is filled with false identities and friendships, which lead to troubles throughout the play.
Hamlets madness is originally triggered by his mother’s hasty marriage to his uncle Claudius. When he finds out that Claudius murdered his father from the ghost of Hamlet Senior he is outraged and swears retribution. As part of Hamlet’s plot for revenge he pretends to become insane.
