The poem “Thanatopsis”, by William Cullen Bryant, is about the author’s view of death.
In fact, the word thanatopsis is Greek for “a view of death”. It is written in a metrical
pattern known as blank verse. The author depicts death from nature’s point of view. He
begins the poem by using personification, describing nature as a woman. Bryant allows
the reader to appreciate the beauty of nature. The author slowing introduces the idea that
death is not something that we have to fear in lines one through thirty. Imagery is used
throughout the poem to convey the relationship of death and nature.
