Briefly describe and differentiate Masters and Johnson’s and Kaplan’s models of the sexual response cycle.
Master and Johnson’s four phases model of sexual response identifies the significant stages of response as excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution. Kaplan’s tri-phasic model of sexual response consists of three phases: desire, excitement, and orgasm. Kaplan collapses into one, eliminates the resolution phase, and adds a phase to the beginning of the process. Although Master and Johnson’s and Kaplan’s are the most widely cited models used to describe the phases of the sexual response cycle, they do little to acknowledge the affective parts of human responses.
