Spoken word and rap are two things from opposite sides of the color spectrum yet somehow, still not complementary. Although some people think that if they can do spoken word then they can rap, they're severely mistaken. Even though rap might sound slightly like spoken word, it is in no way such. Rap is just rhyming words with a stentorian base line, while spoken word can be obnoxious but if it is so, it's intended to sound so.
Spoken word is really whatever the poet wants it to be. It's your words. It's story told with or without rhyming.
