Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is rooted in his personal experiences of
working on a Congo River steamer in 1890. When Conrad sat down to write the
story, conditions in the Congo were already becoming a political subject in England. Heart of Darkness is considered to be a literary classic, as well as, a powerful indictment of evils of imperialism to legitimize empires. It reflects the savage repressions carried out in the Congo to civilize an uncivilized culture.
It is through the life of Conrad’s narrator, Marlow that one sees the violation of a nation being executed; however, he does not fully reveal his position of the world neither does he try to sway the reader to form an opinion. It is only through Conrad’s use of imagery
