Why does the color of our skin have such a negative effect on our lives? In the poem “Between the World and Me” (1935), Richard Wright writes about a heinous crime against another human being, a lynching. By reinventing the scene not only does the poem become surreal it also illustrates social disdain that white southern Americans felt towards their counterparts, Black men. The description of the lynching focused on many issues of the time.
