Paleolithic art was started about 32,000 to 11,000 years ago during the Stone Age. Much of the art produced in the time era fell into two main categories. One was the portable pieces and another, probably the most familiar, was cave art. Portable pieces included small figurines and decorated objects. They were carved out of bone, stone, or from clay. Paleolithic art usually is grouped as either figurative, depicting animals or humans, or nonfigurative, taking the form of signs and symbols.
