In the tragedy, King Lear, characters become victims of their own flaws. King Lear begins his downfall due to his hamartia - and the division of the kingdom through his proposed love contest between his daughters. The contest is brought upon by his faulty judgment, his pride and rashness, and his insecure and self-absorbed personality. This shows Lear’s incompetence as a father and a leader for his country.
