Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of The Ugly Duckling not only differs is from most traditional folklore tales, but it is also unlike many of tales that Andersen popularized. Most of Anderson’s tales are similar to traditional folklore in that they have a “bite” to them. They are humorous, but darkly so; they probe into moral and existential issues that remain with us. Anderson borrowed freely from folklore and retold tales that had been part of the folklore tradition for centuries (Russell, 158). He changed the tales to reflect his own life.
