The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires that employers allow up to 12 months of unpaid, job-protected leave to an eligible employee for certain medical and family reasons. The Department of Labor describes an eligible employee as an employee that has worked for an employer for a least one year, and for 1,250 hours over the previous 12 months, and if they are at least 50 employees within 75 miles. The FMLA also permits employees to take leave intermittently or reduce their hours depending on the circumstances surrounding the family or medical situation.
