PURPOSE- This lab provides experience with sea urchins to students. They will fertilize gametes and look at the early stages of sea urchins. In this lab they will introduce spawning of gametes by injecting potassium chloride solution. They also collect the released gametes and fertilize the eggs with the sperm.
BACKGROUND- Learning about sea urchins gives information on the fertilization and growth that is the same to all living things. It is important to study early life, so that you can learn more about the origin of living things. Sea urchin gametes look very much like human gametes up to the gastrula stage.
MATERIALS-
• 0.5M potassium chloride solution (3.73g of KCL in 100ml of distilled water)
