Gout is a condition that results from crystals of uric acid depositing in tissues of the body. Gout is characterized by an overload of uric acid in the body and recurring attacks of joint inflammation, or arthritis. The common notion is that gout is mainly caused by eating meat and drinking alcohol. Gout often runs in families being passed down from one generation to the next which disproves this. Chronic gout can lead to deposits of hard lumps of uric acid in and around the joints called tophi . As uric acid accumulates it can form needle-like crystals (MSU - monosodium urate crystals, a compound of sodium and uric acid) which become deposited in the joints causing swelling and pain.
