To call something a homage, a tribute, or even a remix has always been a shaky claim. In the literary world, authenticity is everything. Plagiarism is a sure fire why to be discredited and detested among critics and readers alike. This is why it is difficult to see Borges’ piece as an original work on its own. The issue is that this piece could not stand on its own; it refers to an older work. In actuality, it is written more as a review or critique than anything else. Cervantes’ work is completely original and in many ways changed the direction of literature. Cervantes’ version is far superior to Borges’ version.
