|
Thomas Jefferson was a scientist as well as the President of the United States. The United States bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. Jefferson wanted to find out what was there so Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to find a passage to the Pacific and explore what was bought. Jefferson had sent Lewis and Clark on the expedition of the century.
The expedition started on May 14, 1804 and their first few months were spent studying books and maps, talking with traders and soldiers during the winter at Camp Wood.
