Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a condition that causes the liquid in the stomach to back up into the esophagus. This liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus. This, however, is not too likely among patients. The liquid usually contains acid and pepsin, which are produced by the stomach. GERD is a chronic condition that, once it begins, is usually life-long. The reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus actually occurs in most individuals. Patients diagnosed with GERD, though, have refluxed liquid that contains acid much more often, and that stay inside the esophagus longer.
