Great Gatsby and the American Dream

From the early days of life, one is taught by their parents to be the best that they can be, in hopes to achieve the over-rated “American Dream.” That dream is strived for by most, if not all, for their entire life. However, many people who have achieved the so-called dream are not as happy as they thought they would be, such as Jay Gatsby or Jordan Baker. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses symbol to suggest that the American dream is not all its cut out to be, but rather a lifestyle enriched with depression and dissatisfaction.
