Capital Punishment

I used to think that I supported capital punishment but after reading about and researching the subject, I have come to the conclusion that I do not support it after all. The concept of punishment is that we administer something unpleasant--even painful, like electrocution--on people against their will. On what condition do we give ourselves the authority to “play God”? In America, most states allow capital punishment. Yet, it does not seem that our society is safer or that criminals are threatened by punishment. The United States currently has more people in prison today that any other industrialized country and it can not be guaranteed that all of the people on death row are in fact guilty.
