During the twelve years of reconstruction America was trying to rebuild it’s
society. slavery was a major factor in the 1800s. Maria Jackson was one of the slaves
that had rough life. From1865 to about 1877 Texas, Georgia, and West Virginia were
going through there tough phase; freedom.
Maria Jackson was a slave that had her own views and opinions on America’s
society during the late 1800s. Maria could count but she was illiterate. Most of the
slaves did not know how to count. This was an advantage to Maria. When anyone
bought goods they could get ripped off on their change, or they could get ripped off
on their cotton profit. This never happened to Maria because she could count and make
sure she had her
