The Jesus Seminar began in 1985 and was founded by a man named Robert Funk, a New Testament scholar. He presided over a group of scholars that called themselves “the Jesus Seminar.” This particular group would meet biennially, at each meeting they would focus on deciding whether the life of Jesus’ sayings were authentic or not. After discussion and debate a vote would be taken and each participant would cast a colored bead into a box. Red would mean that Jesus without a doubt said this, or something very close; pink indicated that Jesus probably said something like this; gray meant that Jesus did not say this, though it may reflect something of Jesus’ ideas; and black indicated that Jesus did not say anything like it.
