The time is just before sunrise. He stops on the threshold and casts a despairing look at his children, crying from hunger. Today, yet again, there is no food in the house. His wife, gaunt and haggard, tries vainly to comfort the children. He cannot meet her eyes as he leaves to toil for long hours under harsh conditions in the hope of earning enough money to provide his family with a decent meal this day. He is just one of the approximately 1.3 billion people throughout the Third World who live on less than one dollar a day.
