Feelings as External Beings in the Poems of Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson wrote on topics that she wished to understand better. Often these topics, such as circumference and nature, were external to her and they were less difficult to look at and try to explain as opposed to her feelings. Through her poems about pain and joy, Dickinson strove to not only understand these emotions, but also to be able to convey the images to her “audience” through her writing. Giving the emotions human characteristics gave Dickinson a way to pull apart the exact feeling or emotion and be able to write about it easier.
