Knee Play 1 was written by Philip Glass as the opening of his opera, Einstein on the Beach. The musical instrument heard in this piece is the electric organ with a chorus consisting of men and women, and two female speaking voices. The melodic pattern has a repeated, steady beat that creates an effect of ceremonial chanting. The beginning of this piece starts off with the electric organ establishing the melodic pattern of three long, low tones, A-G-C, which is repeated throughout the entire piece. After the melodic pattern is established the chorus joins in with the men singing the melody and the women sing the harmony of C-D-E.
