After Texas was officially annexed to the United States Mexicans began to lose their lands and the very the right to determine their futures. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, landownership equaled status and with it came the rights of citizenship. To take this away from Mexican citizens was essentially stripping them of their rights. In doing so, the Anglo leaders took away their political power by taking their land and forced them into bottom rung jobs and afforded them the little to no chance to climb back up the economic ladder. For example in 1900 it was estimated that over 43 percent of menial, unspecialized jobs were held by Mexican immigrants in Texas. While the more high-status jobs were offered to Anglos.
